Mexican Mountain
On Tuesday, November 12, 2019 a group of three planes rocketed away from Blake Field around noontime en route to Mexican Mountain Airstrip for an opportunity to enjoy Dee’s famous hot dog lunch roasted over a camp fire — Lowell and Dee in their Murphy Rebel, Jeff in his yellow Cub, and Ray in his silver Zenith 750 with Ernst as copilot.
Jeff led the flight direct to Green River, Utah, at which time Lowell and Dee went ahead to check out the strip. Jeff, Ray and Ernst decided to take a “scenic diversion” and overflew the strip. None having been there before, they flew Northwest until they realized they had missed it. Backtracking down the river they heard Lowell on the radio who then guided the group to the strip. Jeff landed next, then Ray and Ernst landed last. Ray confessed he was vibrating like a tuning fork after landing as this was his first backcountry landing.
Lunch was delicious but due to the lateness of the day the group headed back. Jeff and Ray detoured to Canyonlands for fuel, then flew Eastbound. With the sun getting lower, the scenery below became more beautiful and amazing with every mile. Just past Gateway Jeff turned toward his home. Lowell, Dee, Ray, and Ernst raced the setting sun to Delta, landing on 21 just as darkness descended. This was a fantastic day with great memories.
