This means a Sport Pilot may be able to fly these aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing aircraft with a standard airworthiness certificate, like a Cessna 182, will forever remain type-certificated aircraft. They are not Light Sport Aircraft (LSA). However, a Sport Pilot may fly these aircraft if they meet stall speed and other requirements. Note that a Repairman Light Sport (LSRM or LSRI) <strong>is NOT authorized<\/strong> to perform the annual on these aircraft; only an A&amp;P-IA may do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing experimental amateur built (EAB) aircraft, like a Vans RV-9A, will forever retain their special airworthiness certificate as EAB aircraft (not light sport). The aircraft may be based on a well-tested and proven conventional design and therefore not truly experimental. Homebuilt aircraft built from plans, from a kit, or from scratch fall into this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experimental Amateur Built (EAB) aircraft are those for which the major portion has been fabricated and assembled by a person(s) who undertook the construction process solely for their own education or recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experimental Light-Sport Aircraft (ELSA) are different from EAB. There is no certification required to maintain or repair an experimental aircraft. Literally anyone can perform this work. It simply means that the \u201cmajor portion of the aircraft has been fabricated and assembled by persons who undertook the construction project solely for their own education or recreation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that any number or people may work on the aircraft. In some cases, aircraft kits and projects pass through several owners before they are finally finished. This does not violate the major portion rule as long as all builders \u201cundertook the construction project solely for their own education or recreation\u201d. If you purchase an unfinished kit from another party make sure to obtain the construction log to prove the major portion was amateur built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You <strong>may not<\/strong> pay someone to build your EAB aircraft and you <strong>may not<\/strong> build an EAB aircraft to sell for profit.<br>(Note that ELSA are different from EAB aircraft in this respect. Typically, the OL require the inspector to state in the aircraft log book \u201cI certify that this aircraft has been inspected on [date] per the scope and detail of part 43, appendix D, and was found to be in a condition for safe operation\u201d. Per the OL, a condition inspection is required every 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that although part 43 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/cgi-bin\/text-idx?SID=f223b12b0de5c0ee40b9aedfe3ddaba8&amp;mc=true&amp;node=se14.1.43_11&amp;rgn=div8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a743.1b1<\/a>) specifically states \u201cThis part does not apply to- any aircraft for which the FAA has issued an experimental certificate[\u2026]\u201d, in this case the Operating Limitations override this and the condition inspection must be completed in accordance with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/cgi-bin\/text-idx?SID=f223b12b0de5c0ee40b9aedfe3ddaba8&amp;mc=true&amp;node=ap14.1.43_117.d&amp;rgn=div9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Appendix D<\/a>. Also, note the inspector is certifying the aircraft is \u201cin a condition for safe operation\u201d.
